Trinidad, in Las Animas County in southern Colorado, was a coal and railroad town in 1882, four years after Colorado became a state. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway had reached the town in 1878, and that line turned a river-bottom trading settlement on the Purgatoire into a freight stop for coal, cattle, and goods moving over Raton Pass. Coal mines in the surrounding hills drew Anglo, Hispanic, and European workers, and their wages and company housing shaped the town's streets and social life. Residents in 1882 would have known Trinidad as a rail junction and a mining supply center at the edge of the mountains, a place where new brick buildings were going up alongside older adobe houses.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Trinidad, Colorado, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
