Leadville in 1882 had moved past its first frantic years and was settling into the routines of a permanent city at more than 10,000 feet. Rail lines that reached the town in 1880 now carried ore out to smelters and brought in coal, lumber, and heavy machinery that the freight wagons of earlier years could never haul in quantity. Smelters and mines on the surrounding hills kept crews working in shifts, and the lead-silver ores they produced kept the district among the richest in the country. Civic life grew more formal as churches, schools, and the Tabor Opera House drew families who wanted more than the saloons and gambling halls still crowded along Harrison Avenue. Residents knew their town as a place where a fortune could be dug from the ground and lost on the same street.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Leadville, Colorado, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
