Maysville, Colorado, in 1882 was a small mining settlement in Chaffee County, in the high country west of the Arkansas River, where prospectors had been working silver and lead claims since the late 1870s. Its fortunes rose and fell with the mines in the surrounding hills and with the freight wagons and mule trains that hauled ore out and supplies in over rough roads. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad was extending its line up the Arkansas Valley that same period, and the new railroad towns, Salida among them, which was founded in 1880 as a division point, drew business and people away from isolated camps. Colorado had been a state only since 1876, so residents here were still building churches, schools and town councils while watching to see whether their diggings would last.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Maysville, Colorado, drawn in 1882. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
