Lover's Lane, the shaded path that winds through the northern reaches of Central Park, takes its name from the courting couples who strolled its curves in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out the park in the 1850s and 1860s to offer city residents a green refuge from crowded streets, and paths like this one, with their gentle bends and overhanging trees, gave walkers a sense of seclusion within the bustle of Manhattan. Pictures of the lane often feature the arched canopy and the quiet, leafy privacy that made it a favorite for romantic outings, which is what gives this view its fitting place among Valentine's Day images.
