The only identifying detail on this glass negative is its title, "Campania," a name the Bain News Service wrote on the caption card, though the record marks that label as unverified. The word could point to the region of southern Italy around Naples, or to the Cunard liner Campania, which sailed the Atlantic in the 1890s and early 1900s. The Bain News Service, founded in New York in 1899 by George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers and magazines with news and feature pictures for decades, so its negatives capture a wide range of subjects from that era. Without a verified date or caption, the picture's exact subject and origin remain uncertain.
