The view here is taken from the upper windows or steps of a Presbyterian church, looking down Superior Street, one of the main east-west thoroughfares in downtown Cleveland. By the late 19th century the street was lined with commercial blocks, offices and churches, reflecting Cleveland's rise as an industrial and shipping city on the shore of Lake Erie. Street scenes like this one show how crowded and busy downtown was before the automobile reshaped the city's streets. Pay attention to the mix of building styles, the street-level traffic and the way the church's height gives the view its depth.
