The Bain collection holds many pictures of city offices, but this one shows a marriage license bureau, a place where couples went for the legal paperwork before a wedding. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers and magazines in the early 1900s, often recorded everyday civic life like this. The record gives no date and its title comes from unverified caption information, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of routine government business during the agency's active years. Its large glass negative was the standard working format of press photographers of that time.
