Ink on paper, this 1933 drawing shows the Embassy theater on Penn Street near North 8th Street in Reading, Pennsylvania. It was made during the Depression, when new theater construction slowed across the country but neighborhood movie houses still went up and were remodeled. The Library of Congress holds it among its architecture, design and engineering drawings, which were prepared as working records of how a building was to look and be built. Drawings like this one help historians study American movie theaters of the period, when sound film had made the local theater a central part of town life.
