Rabbits in human clothes, hauling baskets and painted eggs, are the particular charm of this postcard. Easter greeting cards of this kind became popular in Europe and North America around the turn of the twentieth century, when printers could reproduce bright color lithography cheaply and mail was a common way to send holiday wishes. The anthropomorphized rabbit, usually cast as the bringer of eggs, had grown out of German folk custom, where the "Osterhase" was said to leave colored eggs for well-behaved children. Cards like this one were often bought in quantity, so they tell us as much about the everyday sentiment and taste of their era as about the holiday itself.
