The brand name "Sir Apple" and the grower's name, Stephen Bob Scurich, were printed to identify a shipment from Watsonville, a town in the Pajaro Valley of Santa Cruz County, California, where apple orchards once covered much of the flat farmland. Many growers in that region were immigrants from Dalmatia, and family orchards and packing sheds were central to the local economy. Crate labels like this one were colorful lithographs pasted to wooden boxes so that fruit would stand out on wholesale docks and in grocers' displays far from the orchard. Such designs aimed to make a plain crate of fruit look like a promise of quality.
