The record gives little detail about this scene beyond its title, but it places the picture in about 1902, when American football was a rougher game than today. Players wore leather helmets and little padding, and the flying wedge and mass formations produced frequent serious injuries. Those dangers led President Theodore Roosevelt to press for rule changes in 1905, and the forward pass was legalized in 1906. The photograph was registered for copyright, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress collection, and it offers a glimpse of the sport in its early, more violent form.
