A small force of Marines landed at Guantánamo Bay in June 1898, and this print shows the moment they raised the American flag on Cuban soil. It came roughly seven weeks after the United States declared war on Spain, making the landing an early step in the Spanish-American War. The image is a color photomechanical reproduction issued by the Werner Company of Akron, Ohio, a publisher that produced inexpensive patriotic and educational prints for schools and homes at the time.
