The record places this engraving of the Géant balloon near Nuremberg, a rare German setting for a machine better known from its French launches. The balloon was built for Félix Tournachon, the photographer known as Nadar, who used the name Tournachon in his professional work, and it was the largest balloon of its day when it first flew from Paris in October 1863. The engraving reproduces the craft and its basket from Tournachon's work, showing how the public saw the enormous aerostat during its European tour of flights and landings. Its popularity in print helped turn ballooning into a spectacle for newspaper readers.
