Raphael Tuck & Sons, the London firm that became famous for greeting cards and picture postcards, issued this color lithograph in the 1880s under the title "Christmas Morn," painted by W.C. Bauer. Its subject is a quiet rural scene rather than a holiday feast or a city street, which fits the period's taste for sentimental country Christmas images. Chromolithographs like this one were cheap enough to hang in ordinary homes, so they helped spread a picture of the snowy, cozy, rustic holiday that many Victorian and late-Victorian families came to expect.
