A boy with his drum at rest, sketched in pencil at Culpeper, Virginia, on September 30, 1863, shows a quieter moment than most wartime images of military musicians. Culpeper sat in the Piedmont and had been a crossroads for both armies through 1863, so Union camps there were a common setting for soldiers waiting between marches. Drummers, often boys in their early teens, sounded the signals that structured camp life, from reveille to lights out. The drawing bears the initials "EF," and the record does not identify the artist further.
