Rather than a battlefield or camp scene, this glass negative is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, dated 1860, the year he won the presidency. David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866, made it using the wet collodion process, in which the plate had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet. The title comes from Civil War caption books, and the number 2394 scratched into the emulsion marks how the negative was cataloged. It now survives in the Library of Congress as part of a larger collection of Civil War glass negatives.
