Few things along the old transcontinental roads survive as plainly as a concrete marker, and this one carries the pale L and the bronze-style plaque that the Lincoln Highway Association placed to guide motorists from New York to San Francisco. The highway, completed as a named route in 1913, was among the first attempts to link the country by a single improved road, and its markers were meant to reassure drivers on long stretches where signs were scarce. Many of these posts were set along rural lanes and town edges, and they remain some of the most recognizable reminders of the early motor age. Look closely at the lettering and the squared shape of the post to see how the design was meant to be read at a distance from a moving car.
