Few holiday images from the 1860s carry as much weight as this page from Godey's Lady's Book, the popular Philadelphia magazine edited by Sarah Josepha Hale. Printed in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, it appears in the magazine's editors' section alongside the national day of thanks that President Abraham Lincoln had proclaimed that autumn. Hale had campaigned for years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, and her magazine did much to spread the custom of a shared November feast across the Union. The page is worth a close look for how a domestic holiday was being framed as a source of national unity during a divided era.
