Beat back the Hun with Liberty Bonds" ties the purchase of government debt directly to the fight against Germany, a link wartime poster makers pressed hard. F. Strothmann produced this color poster in 1918, when the Liberty Loan drives were the main way the United States financed its part in the First World War. The catalog record also lists the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, which suggests the design leaned on familiar moral language to make a request for money sound like a call to duty. The word "Hun," used for Germans throughout the war, shows how openly these appeals cast civilians as part of the effort.
