Children crowd around a woman carrying a large pudding on a platter in this illustration, which appeared on page 28 of Lydia Maria Child's *Flowers for Children*, a Boston book of verses and stories for young readers published in 1845. The scene shows the kind of anticipation that surrounded a special family meal in the mid-1800s, when a homemade pudding was a centerpiece of holiday tables. Child, a writer and reformer, often used such domestic scenes to teach children about kindness and household life, and this picture reflects the warm, everyday world her books invited them to imagine.
