The slogan "To have and to hold!" borrows the wording of a wedding vow and applies it to the home front, suggesting that buying a bond is a promise kept to the soldier. This official U.S. Treasury poster from 1944 comes from the years when the government sold war bonds to help pay for fighting in Europe and the Pacific. Posters like it were a central tool of the Treasury's War Finance Division, which ran the bond drives. Artist Vic Guinnell's color design pairs soldiers with the American flag, the national symbols that campaigns relied on to tie private savings to the war effort.
