The arms show a royal palm, the national tree, beside a key, a long-standing emblem of Havana, which Spanish authorities called the "key" to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean trade routes. Cuba's modern coat of arms took shape as the island moved toward independence, and its imagery draws on colonial symbols while claiming a distinctly Cuban identity. Notice how the palm, rooted in the island's landscape, takes the place a Spanish heraldic designer might have given to a royal emblem. The design appears on official documents, currency, and public buildings, which is why it remains one of the most recognized symbols of the nation.
