The detail that sets this picture apart is its focus on a single workman at the edge of a doorway rather than the building's famous façade. Underwood & Underwood, a commercial photography firm that supplied news and stock images to newspapers in the early twentieth century, documented the White House in 1924 while crews kept its exterior presentable. The White House has been painted white since the 1790s, when it was whitewashed to cover the bare sandstone, and it has needed regular repainting ever since, especially on woodwork and trim exposed to weather. A photograph like this one shows the ordinary, continuous labor behind a national symbol.
