Published by N. Currier in New York in 1853, this lithograph is numbered "No. 1" in the American Farm Scenes series, drawn by Fanny Palmer, one of the firm's leading staff artists. Inexpensive prints like this one hung in homes across the country and presented an idealized view of rural life, when farm work depended on horses, hand tools and human labor. Tractors did not appear until decades later, so the gallery's tractor heading reflects a later theme rather than anything in this 1853 scene.
