Workers at a grapefruit canning plant in Winterhaven, Florida, are shown at their stations, a glimpse of the citrus processing that once gave this part of the state much of its economy. Winter Haven sits in Polk County, in the heart of Florida's central citrus belt, where packing houses and canneries turned large harvests into juice and canned fruit. Pictures like this one document the mostly manual labor of the period, when fruit moved by hand from line to can. Its value to researchers lies in showing the work process and the people who carried it out.
