Gullies cut deep into the red clay of Jackson County, Alabama, with an abandoned plow left standing at the edge of the washed ground. The scene dates to 1937, a period when the federal government was documenting the damage that decades of cotton farming had done to Southern soil. Heavy rains on bare, unterraced fields could carve channels several feet deep within a few seasons, swallowing cropland and forcing families to leave their farms. Images like this one were made to show the scale of that loss and to build support for soil conservation programs that the Roosevelt administration was then promoting.
