Dated around March 19, 1921, when Edison was 74, this portrait shows the inventor late in a career that had already transformed electric lighting, sound recording and motion pictures. The caption card, which the record notes is unverified, files the image under typewriters, a reminder that Edison's West Orange laboratories also produced office equipment such as the Ediphone dictating machine. By the early 1920s he was better known as a national figure than as a hands-on tinkerer, and portraits from this period were often made for newspapers and public occasions.
