Few late nineteenth-century library interiors show the machinery of book storage as plainly as this view of the Snead standard stack at Columbia University Library in New York City. Snead & Company, an iron-works firm, supplied open metal shelving of this kind to libraries across the country, and its iron frames let a librarian reach a crowded tier of books without climbing through a closed wooden case. Columbia's collections were then housed in Low Memorial Library, where rows of such stacks reflected the era's push to store growing research collections compactly and with less fire risk. Look closely at the floors and railings, which show how the designers tried to bring light and air into spaces that had once been dark and cramped.
