Few posters from the Federal Art Project's 1930s output name an exhibition as plainly as this one, which advertises a show on modern art trends in Philadelphia. The Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939, employed artists during the Depression, and its silkscreen shops made inexpensive public notices a practical option. A stamp on the back dated January 1939 shows the sheet was kept and filed in the months after it was printed.
