Milton, New Hampshire, in 1888 was a small farming and mill town in Strafford County, where water power from the rivers and ponds drove the factories that gave the village much of its work. Shops and small manufacturies employed townspeople, while most families still kept hillside farms and woodlots in the surrounding countryside. Rail connections to the wider region let local goods reach larger markets, and residents depended on the road and freight traffic that tied the town to nearby cities. Neighbors knew their town by its mill buildings, church steeples, and the halls where town meetings, lodges, and social gatherings took place. The detailed street-by-street view of that year shows a community at the height of the older rural industrial pattern common across New England.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Milton, New Hampshire, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
