Few wartime recruiting posters tie a call to service so directly to a New York landmark. The record links this lithograph to the Statue of Liberty and to naval boats of the period. Printed by Smith & Porter in Boston in 1917, it was issued by the City of Boston Committee on Public Safety, a local wartime body that produced posters to rally support for the war effort. The United States entered World War I in April 1917, and the Navy needed recruits as it expanded, so the poster's pairing of "liberty" with enlistment reflects the patriotic appeal of the era's recruiting art.
