The name Fred Palmer comes from the caption cards or negative sleeves that the Bain News Service used, and the Library of Congress notes that the title has not been independently verified. This is a glass negative of the kind the Bain agency produced in large numbers in New York in the early twentieth century, when its photographers covered news events, public figures and city life for newspapers and magazines. The record gives no date, so the picture is best understood as one piece of that larger body of working press photography, where names were often jotted down quickly at the time of shooting and could be incomplete.
