Few pictures on this board show cavalry in motion as plainly as this glass negative, titled "Uhlans advancing." Uhlans were lancers, light cavalry carrying pennant-tipped lances, and the title points to the German or Austro-Hungarian units that fought across Europe in the First World War. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that Bain News Service staff wrote without later verification, so the exact scene is uncertain. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds the wire service's pictures from this period, and its glass plates are often the only surviving record of such moments.
