A soft-toned chromolithograph titled "The angel's whisper" shows a sleeping child in a cradle with an angel leaning close, a sentimental subject that was popular in American parlors of the 1890s. The print was issued by the Great Western Supply House in Chicago around 1894 and registered for copyright, which was how publishers protected their designs from being copied. Chromolithographs like this one were built up from many stone or metal plates, each inked in a different color, so they could imitate painting at a fraction of the cost. Such images were often sold to families for nursery walls, where they carried gentle messages about childhood innocence and guardian care.
