The cemetery's rostrum, the raised speakers' platform in the Gettysburg National Cemetery, is the feature that sets this view apart from other scenes of the grounds. Gettysburg National Cemetery was dedicated on November 19, 1863, and a platform like this one stood at the center of the ceremony, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his address. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold news pictures in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, which was likely taken decades after the dedication as the battlefield became a national memorial. The record gives no exact date, so the photograph is best read as a record of how the site looked to visitors in that later era.
