The record gives no date, so this view of a Democratic National Convention in session can only be placed by the caption card the Bain News Service attached to its negatives. The agency, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain around the turn of the twentieth century, sold news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this were made for fast reproduction alongside the day's stories. Convention halls of that era filled with delegates and spectators, and the glass plate records that crowded floor. Matching the hall and banners against dated convention photographs would help pin down the year.
