A crate label showing a green parrot perched beside a red apple sets this piece apart from the many apple labels on this board, since the bird is the feature that drew the eye of the buyer. Labels like this one were printed in large runs in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when growers in orchard regions shipped fruit by rail to city markets and needed a bright, memorable mark to sell their brand. Bold color lithography and animal motifs were a common way to stand out on a crowded grocery shelf. Look closely at the lettering and border, which show how the printers balanced the brand name with the picture.
