Washington apple crate labels like this one, sold under the Empire Builder name, were printed to catch the eye of buyers stacking crates on grocery shelves and in produce markets across the country. Early in the twentieth century, the state's growers relied on bright chromolithographed art and brand names to set their fruit apart from competitors, since a shopper could rarely see inside the box before buying. Labels such as this one were pasted onto the ends of wooden crates, and many survive today as a record of how the region marketed its orchards. Worth noticing is how the design balances the fruit itself with the promise of quality and place.
