The name Mad River sets this label apart from the many Washington apple crates on the board, which usually carried orchard brands or valley names. Crate labels like this were printed in bright colors to catch the eye of buyers and grocers, since the fruit itself was packed out of sight inside wooden boxes. Washington's apple industry expanded quickly once railroads and irrigation opened up the Yakima and Wenatchee valleys in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and labels such as this one helped carry that fruit to markets across the country.
