Taylor Maid is the brand name printed across this crate label, a reminder that Washington apple growers in the early twentieth century competed for buyers by stamping their fruit with memorable names and bright lithographed art. Crate labels like this one were pasted to the ends of wooden boxes so that shipments could be recognized at railroad yards and in city produce markets far from the orchards. Washington's apple industry expanded rapidly after irrigation projects opened the arid central part of the state to orchards, and labels such as this one helped growers and packing houses build a reputation for quality. Today the labels are valued as small examples of commercial graphic design.
