The name "Empire Builder" sets this label apart from the other apple crates in this group. It shares its title with the Great Northern Railway's passenger train, which ran between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest and was named for railroad magnate James J. Hill, a man often called an empire builder. Rail lines carried much of Washington's fruit to eastern markets, so the name suited a region that depended on the railroad. Labels like this were usually printed in bright color lithography and pasted onto wooden crates, turning each shipment into a small advertisement on its way to grocers across the country.
