Washington's apple industry leaned on crate labels like this one to set its fruit apart from competitors in distant markets. The state seal in the design signaled a regional origin at a time when buyers in eastern cities had little way to judge fruit before it arrived. Crate labels of this era were often printed in bold color lithography, with the brand name dominant and the seal anchoring the composition. Because the label was meant to be pasted on a wooden box and seen across a grocer's display, its layout tells us as much about early twentieth-century advertising as it does about the orchards behind the fruit.
