The poster's central image is of workers at a forge, shaping the metal that would become weapons, a subject that set it apart from the many posters urging citizens to buy bonds or conserve food. Issued by the United States government in 1918, the year the war ended, it belongs to the wave of wartime propaganda that asked civilians to see their factory and home labor as part of the fighting effort. Its message was that industrial production at home mattered as much as the troops overseas. Look closely at the figures and the heavy, hammered composition, which were meant to convey strength and collective effort.
