*The Political Debutante* is a 1916 cartoon drawn by Chamberlain and reproduced from its appearance in *The Evening Sun* on July 24, 1916, during the run-up to that year's presidential contest. The title's playful image of a newcomer entering public life fits the moment, when women in several states already held the vote and the election drew fresh attention to who would take part in it. The record is based on an old caption card and has not been fully verified, so the figure's identity and the cartoon's exact message are best read from the drawing itself. Editorial cartoons of this period often used such social metaphors to comment on candidates and voters alike.
