Chambersburg, a town in south-central Pennsylvania, is the setting for this pencil and white-pigment drawing of Confederate troops leaving town. The title credits Jeb Stuart, but Stuart had been killed at Yellow Tavern in May 1864, and the October raid on Chambersburg was led by Brig. Gen. John McCausland. Confederate cavalry burned much of the town's business district after residents could not meet a demand for money, so the storefronts and the children in the scene are worth a closer look as a record of civilians watching the soldiers ride out.
