Two familiar party animals, a donkey and an elephant, appear here as submarines gliding beneath the waves, with the title warning of a "looming tragedy of the political deep." The cartoon ran in the *Chicago Daily News* on November 1, 1906, less than a week before the congressional midterm elections. Submarines were still a new and unsettling technology in 1906, so the image plays on the period's unease about hidden dangers. Like much American editorial cartooning of the era, it relies on animal symbols, the donkey for Democrats and the elephant for Republicans, that readers recognized at a glance.
