A haloed child among roses gives this Merry Christmas postcard a gentler mood than the snowy village scenes and Santa figures that filled many holiday cards of its era. Postcards like this grew popular around the turn of the twentieth century, when cheap printing and reliable mail service made it easy to send seasonal greetings across town or across the country. Many were color lithographs, and designers often borrowed religious imagery such as halos and angels to convey the warmth of the season. Roses, a flower common in greeting cards of the period, add a sentimental touch that was typical of the time.
