A girl, a gnome and a pair of rabbits share the frame of this Easter postcard, a combination that points to the German-influenced holiday imagery popular in early twentieth-century greeting cards. Easter postcards of this era were mass-produced by printers in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, then mailed across the Atlantic, and they often mixed children, eggs and rabbits with folk-style figures like gnomes. Such cards were sent to wish friends a happy holiday and were frequently saved in albums, which is why so many survive today. Look closely at the colors and lettering, which show how chromolithography was used to give these small cards their bright, layered look.
