Jupiter Cigars advertised itself with a bold chromolithograph poster reading "For Sale Here," a sign meant to be tacked to a shop window or wall where customers would see it while buying. Chromolithography, which layered several color stones to build vivid printed images, was the workhorse of late nineteenth-century advertising, and cigar makers relied on it heavily because the printed poster was cheap to produce in quantity. Look closely at the lettering and the saturated colors: they show how commercial printers competed for attention on crowded streets before photography became common in ads.
