Murad was one of the best-known brands of Turkish cigarettes sold in the United States in the early twentieth century, and this poster leans on that foreign appeal by showing the packs themselves as the centerpiece. Turkish tobacco, blended with American flue-cured leaf, was marketed as a sophisticated, Eastern-tinged alternative to plain domestic smokes, and posters like this one built that image through exotic packaging and confident, simple layouts. Such advertising appeared in magazines, streetcar cards and shop displays, and it shows how tobacco companies sold lifestyle as much as the product. Look closely at the packs and the lettering, which reveal how brand identity was built through color and type.
